A physical therapist (PT) plays a crucial role in helping patients learn to walk safely and effectively with a walker or cane, especially those who are recovering from surgery or injury, or dealing with chronic conditions that impact their mobility.
The office of Motion Dynamics Physical Therapy has a well-earned reputation for exceptional skill. We prioritize comfort and satisfaction, which gives our patients confidence that they’re in superior hands when receiving professional and compassionate care.
A PT first assesses a patient’s needs, considering factors such as strength, balance, pain levels and range of motion. This lets the PT recommend the most appropriate mobility aid—a walker, cane or a specialized device—and ensures it fits her (or his) physical abilities and goals. A PT measures the height of the cane or walker and adjusts it to the patient’s body to optimize posture and stability, which is key in preventing strain or injury. A poorly sized mobility aid leads to poor posture, muscle fatigue or even falls.
Once the proper aid is chosen and adjusted, the PT teaches the patient how to use it. A cane involves training the patient to hold it on the opposite side of the injured or weaker leg. For walkers, the PT shows the patient how to move it forward, step toward it with her weaker leg first and then bring the stronger leg forward for support. Teaching these sequences provides balance and reduces the risk of further injury.
A large part of a PT’s role is to help the patient gain confidence in using the mobility aid outside of controlled settings. A PT works with patients to practice using their walker or cane on different surfaces and inclines such as stairs, curbs and uneven ground. Some patients feel frustrated or self-conscious about their mobility aid. A PT encourages them, celebrates their progress and helps them emotionally adjust with dignity and optimism.
